Meehan group’s services are rooted in law

We work for the federal courts of New York, Washington DC and the courts of Japan since the early 90’s. Particularly in the court rooms of Japan, we have seen unfortunately many judges (almost/sometimes) frown upon defendants for their behavior, unbeknownst to the defendant, at both their response to questions and presentation of their regret, sincerity and apology to an entirely Japanese audience, and this often times led to a less than desirable outcome at verdict because the Japanese did not appreciate or sometimes even believe the defendant’s words to be genuine. What is a perfectly acceptable apology or expression of regret in the western hemisphere is simply not enough or proper to convey genuine apology in a Japanese judicial forum.

To make this matter more complex, a juror (lay judge) system was introduced to Japan in 2009, and non Japanese defendants must today speak to and appease a far greater Japanese judicial panel. In this environment, continued ignorance to fine cultural nuances and proper code of conduct in a Japanese court room will only further hurt the defendant at time of verdict. And sadly, lawyers in Japan only defend, and do not provide any of this cultural support to place the defendant at equal footing with Japanese defendants.

We are the only providers of this support, and have helped numerous defendants in Japan to receive (more) fair and deserved outcome in unfortunate legal involvements in Japan. When in Rome (Japan), do as the Romans (Japanese) do. This is our service and what we teach.
